The Yumi is a powerful bow that was used in warfare. Its arrows were so strong that they could penetrate armor. On the other hand, the Hankyu is shorter and more mobile, making it ideal for hunting or for use against enemies not wearing armor.
Nowadays, the Yumi is used in the sport of kyudo (Japanese archery), while the Hankyu is used in a game called “Shihanmato”, which is popular among farmers in Kyushu. However, it’s important to note that kyudo emphasizes beauty and mental training rather than combat, and uses a weaker bow.
At our facility, visitors can learn how to use traditional bows for combat purposes in the past.
