During the Edo period (1603-1867), a sport was popular to see how many arrows could pass through a hallway from one end to the other within a set time without touching the ceiling or the floor.
It was called “Tohshiya” mean thread an arrow through a Long temple corridor.
Sanjusangendo is the most famous place, but it seems to have been played at Todaiji Temple and various other places.
The bow was made even shorter under the grip than a regular Japanese bow, and specialized for making light arrows fly at high speed. Specialized arrows were also used, and very light arrows weighing around 15g were shot with a bow weighing about 25-35kg.
